Vacancy description

Our client is a purpose-driven ecotourism, conservation and agroforestry organisation operating in São Tomé and Príncipe.

Its activities include boutique hospitality, sustainable agriculture, conservation and community development. The organisation is committed to protecting the natural and cultural heritage of the islands while developing responsible businesses that create long-term social and economic value.

They are seeking an experienced Agro-Industrial Development Manager to lead and develop a premium chocolate production operation in São Tomé.

The Opportunity

This is a hands-on factory leadership role combining production management, quality control, team development and business growth.

The successful candidate will support the transition and handover of an existing chocolate operation, stabilise production and ensure that important technical knowledge is successfully transferred.

The role will then focus on improving processes, strengthening food safety and quality standards, developing the local team and supporting the future growth of the products in local and international markets.

The position is based on the main island of São Tomé, with occasional travel to Príncipe.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the transition and operational handover of the production facility.
  • Manage daily factory operations, production planning and product quality.
  • Work closely with the existing team to ensure effective knowledge transfer.
  • Implement and improve production procedures, SOPs and operational controls.
  • Maintain high standards of food safety, hygiene and quality.
  • Improve production efficiency, yields and waste management.
  • Coordinate factory maintenance, equipment and technical improvements.
  • Lead, train and develop the local production team.
  • Support product development and future commercial growth.

About You

You are a practical and adaptable production leader who enjoys working closely with factory teams.

You are resilient, culturally sensitive and comfortable working in a remote environment where logistics, electricity and supply-chain challenges require patience and creative problem-solving.

Requirements

  • Strong experience in food manufacturing, agro-processing or industrial production.
  • Management experience within a factory or processing operation.
  • Solid knowledge of production processes, food safety and quality control.
  • Experience implementing SOPs and improving operational performance.
  • Strong team leadership, training and development skills.
  • A practical and hands-on management style.
  • Ability to live and work in a remote or developing-market environment.
  • Relevant qualification in food technology, engineering, production management or a related field.
  • Direct chocolate or cocoa-processing experience is highly desirable.
  • Candidates with relevant experience in coffee, vanilla, tea, spices, nuts, fruit processing or natural oils may also be considered.
  • Experience in Africa, on an island or in another remote environment would be an advantage.
  • Working Portuguese is strongly preferred.

A competitive international package and relocation support will be offered.

If you are passionate about food manufacturing, operational improvement and developing high-quality products in a unique environment, we would love to hear from you. Apply today through the link below.
