Vacancy description

Our client is a pioneering ecotourism, conservation and agricultural organisation based on the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of Príncipe Island. Their mission is to demonstrate how sustainable tourism, regenerative agriculture and environmental conservation can work together to create lasting economic and social impact.

They are seeking an experienced Agricultural Operations Director to lead and further develop their agricultural operations, with a strong focus on cocoa, agroforestry, horticulture and sustainable food production. This is a rare opportunity to combine strategic leadership, operational excellence and commercial thinking in one of the world's most unique environments.

The Opportunity
As a member of the senior leadership team, you will be responsible for defining and executing the agricultural strategy while ensuring that operations remain environmentally sustainable, commercially viable and closely integrated with the island's hospitality and conservation initiatives.

You will oversee the full agricultural value chain, from production and processing through to product development and commercialisation, while leading multidisciplinary teams and building local capacity.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement the long-term agricultural strategy and operational plans.
  • Lead and optimise horticultural, agroforestry and cocoa production systems.
  • Drive continuous improvements in productivity, sustainability and operational performance.
  • Identify opportunities for new crops, products and value-added agricultural initiatives.
  • Oversee cocoa production, processing and quality management.
  • Strengthen the commercial development of cocoa and agricultural products, including market opportunities and sales.
  • Collaborate with hospitality teams to align agricultural production with hotel and restaurant requirements.
  • Implement systems for production planning, monitoring and reporting.
  • Promote best practices in sustainable agriculture and good manufacturing processes.
  • Build, mentor and lead a high-performing agricultural team while developing local talent.
  • Ensure agricultural practices remain aligned with conservation objectives and the unique biosphere environment.

About You
You are a strategic agricultural leader who enjoys combining hands-on operational management with commercial thinking. You are adaptable, resilient and motivated by the opportunity to live and work in a remote environment where your contribution will have a visible and lasting impact.

Requirements
  • Degree in Agronomy, Agriculture, Forestry or a related field.
  • Extensive senior-level experience managing agricultural operations.
  • Strong knowledge of tropical agriculture, agroforestry or plantation management.
  • Experience in agricultural processing, preferably within cocoa or other value-added crops.
  • Understanding of agricultural markets, product development and commercialisation.
  • Experience working in remote or developing-country environments.
  • Proven ability to lead multidisciplinary teams and drive organisational change.
  • Passion for sustainability, conservation and community development.
  • High levels of resilience, cultural sensitivity and adaptability.
  • Portuguese and English language skills are highly desirable.
