Our client is a prominent construction and engineering European managed company based in Nigeria. It is known for its involvement in large-scale infrastructure projects, operating primarily in the construction and civil engineering sectors. For their engineering department they are looking for a Senior Road Design Engineer.

Key Role and Responsibilities:

The Senior Road Design Engineer will play a key role in leading technical design within the infrastructure division, ensuring high-quality road designs that meet both Nigerian and international standards. Reporting to the General Manager, the role involves reviewing and optimizing designs, mentoring junior staff, and ensuring adherence to quality management systems. The Senior Design Engineer will collaborate closely with internal teams, external consultants, and relevant authorities, contributing to value engineering, cost evaluation, and technical innovation, while maintaining a focus on safety, sustainability, and client satisfaction in delivering complex infrastructure projects across Nigeria.

RESPONSIBILITIES, SCOPE & AUTHORITIES
Leadership / Staff
  • Ensures transfer of expert knowledge to less experienced staff.
  • Guides and develops staff in technical matters.
  • Ensures that all staff are current with applicable industry codes and standards.
  • Supports staff training and development.
  • Financial Performance
  • Supports the Head of Department (HoD) in managing the financial performance of the department.
  • Assists in cost evaluation for projects.

Technical Performance
  • Responsible for checking and reviewing designs, ensuring integrity in line with Quality Management System (QMS).
  • Supports and advises the HoD on all technical matters.
  • Contributes to value engineering processes to optimize project designs.
  • Undertakes special tasks to develop specialized knowledge within the department.
  • Liaises with sister company for technical collaboration.
  • Understands the scope of services for various projects.
  • Supports in securing timely delivery of project services.
  • Stays up to date with current trends and best practices in engineering and ensures knowledge dissemination within the department.

Quality
  • Supports in ensuring that all applicable technical standards are met in the department’s service delivery.
  • Ensures full implementation and maintenance of ISO 9001:2015 requirements.

Client
  • Participates in client meetings as required.
  • Liaises with clients on technical matters.

Others
  • Reviewing and evaluating engineering drawings and plans to ensure they meet structural requirements.
  • Providing advisory services during the design process to ensure infrastructural integrity and efficiency.
  • Any other task assigned by the line manager.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Formal Education
  • Holds a Master’s degree or equivalent in the respective engineering discipline from a reputable university, training institute, or industrial organization.
  • Registered with the respective Nigerian professional body (e.g., NSE, COREN) for a minimum of 5 years or registered with a similar professional body in another country.

Work Experience
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience as a Senior Design Engineer, including at least 5 years of international experience.
  • Strong expertise in independently designing, optimizing, and checking complex engineering designs and infrastructure.
  • Highly familiar with engineering codes/standards; knowledge of international codes/standards (e.g., German, British) is desirable.
  • Experience working in an international, multidisciplinary design firm and has undergone internal training for the role.

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities
Proficient in:
  • MS Office, AutoCAD, Civil3D, EPANET, EPASWMM, HY8, URBANO (PRO-VI is desirable).
  • Structural mechanics, risk evaluation, and material engineering.
  • Quality assurance and compliance monitoring.
  • Understanding of relevant building codes, standards, and legal requirements.
  • Ability to create infrastructural designs that meet aesthetic and functional requirements.
  • Monitoring construction processes to ensure compliance with design plans.
